Acid Reflux During Pregnancy

Indigestion, also called heartburn or acid reflux, is common in pregnancy. Ask your doctor for the best option. When prevention methods aren’t successful a pregnant woman can try a glass of low-fat milk or a cup of low-fat yogurt. The American Pregnancy Association suggests this may neutralize acid. Another similar remedy directs women to mix a tablespoon of honey in a glass of warm milk. Many moms-to-be have found relief by eating raw almonds, sucking on slippery elm lozenges or taking papaya enzyme tablets. You can also try propping up your upper body when you sleep; that position can decrease the amount of acid that backs up into your throat.

Symptoms usually come on soon after eating or drinking, but there can sometimes be a delay between eating and developing indigestion. When you suspect that you have GERD, your signs and symptoms worsen, or youexperience nausea, vomiting or difficulty swallowing, speak for your medical professional. Making adjustments to your diet and eating habits can help you reduce your acid index reflux symptoms and your need for antacids. Long-term use of antacids, however, may result in unwanted health effects. It may help to eat smaller portions and stay in an upright position after meals. Avoid high-fat foods, spicy foods, and certain fruits, vegetables, and beverages if they trigger symptoms.
