Acid Reflux In Infants And Breastfeeding Babies

We are proud to announce that Laura Barmby’s booklet, Breastfeeding Your Baby with Reflux, is now available for free. If your newborn is exclusively breastfed, the milk you provide is the only source of nutrition to the baby. This breast milk contains the very essence and goodness of all that you consume as a breastfeeding mother. But any ill effects or side effects of the food you eat can also end up in your breast milk. Reflux is sometimes due to the muscle of the baby’s stomach, not being mature enough yet. Premature babies are at increased risk of reflux. Instead of joining the moms and tots playgroup or the PTA, you joined PAGER, Mothers of Asthmatics and the Food and Allergy Network.

Some baby seats and car seats can make the baby uncomfortable and aggravate reflux because they bend him in the middle and put pressure on the stomach. A baby seat or car seat may not offer enough support to keep a young baby in the ideal upright position. A good alternative is to use a front carrier, a sling, or (for older babies with good head and neck control) a backpack. As an added bonus, babies who are held more generally cry less. As unpleasant as it is sometimes, infants spitting up is common. It often even makes for some laughs on occasion because they tend to do it when it is LEAST convenient for mom! Spitting up is especially common during the first three months of age, for most babies, it will disappear as he or she grows older.

Like the kidney beans, black beans can also cause gas troubles and acid reflux in babies if it is consumed by the breastfeeding mother. It is commonly seen that even the adults complain about acidity after they consume cabbage. It is a known irritant of the digestive system if not cooked properly and if consumed in excess. If consumed by the breastfeeding mother, it can lead to similar results in the baby. Although seldom seen in breastfed babies, regular projectile vomiting in a newborn can be a sign of pyloric stenosis , a stomach problem requiring surgery. It occurs 4 times more often in boys than in girls, and symptoms usually appear between 3 and 5 weeks of age. Newborns who projectile vomit at least once a day should be checked out by their doctor.

It is no new news that babies are prone to acid reflex and commonly spit up. The immature digestive system of your newborn is only getting introduced to the food. The doctors recommend that a newborn be given only breast milk. The cause is the baby’s sphincter muscle. check out here This is a small muscle that works like a door between the esophagus and stomach. As food travels through the esophagus, the door opens so that it passes easily into the stomach. The door should then shut so that the food doesn’t go back into the esophagus.
