Heartburn, Regurgitation, Dyspepsia, And More

Get the basics about acid reflux, heartburn, and GERD. Cigarette smoking weakens the LES. Stopping smoking is important to reduce GERD symptoms. Esophageal manometry can check the function of the esophagus and lower esophageal sphincter. Note: You should make your health-care professional aware if you take these medications on a chronic basis as there can be interactions with other medications and frequent use will alert your doctor to the severity of symptoms. One controlled study of patients with GERD found no evidence for the effects of spearmint on the lower esophageal sphincter.

Summary: There is limited evidence that chocolate worsens reflux symptoms. A few studies suggest it might, but more research is needed. An oft-cited Gallup poll found that nearly two-thirds of people with heartburn said stress worsened their symptoms. No one is sure why. Experts have speculated that anxious people may produce more stomach acid, and some studies indicate that, during times of stress, your perception of the discomfort of reflux is heightened. Heartburn and GERD are commonly associated with pregnancy and can occur in women who may never have had GERD symptoms before. Pregnant women usually experience GERD symptoms around the first trimester. It then worsens in the last trimester. The good news is that when your baby is born, your symptoms usually go away.

Heartburn in Children and Infants Heartburn in infants and young children is usually a sign of gastroesophageal reflux (also called GERD or acid reflux). If medications don’t completely resolve your symptoms of acid reflux disease and the symptoms are severely interfering with your life, your doctor could recommend surgery. There are two types of surgical treatment used to relieve symptoms of GERD if daily use of medication isn’t effective. Yet, the study showed that high doses of spearmint may worsen acid reflux symptoms, presumably by irritating the inside of the esophagus ( 47 ).

If refluxed liquid gets past the upper esophageal sphincter, it can enter the throat (pharynx) and even the voice box (larynx). The resulting inflammation can lead to a sore throat and hoarseness As with coughing and asthma, it is not clear just how commonly GERD is responsible for otherwise unexplained inflammation of the throat and larynx. websites Some people suffer from reflux symptoms during the night ( 48 ). Elevating the head of the bed on 6-inch blocks or sleeping on a specially designed wedge reduces heartburn by allowing gravity to minimize reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus. Do not use pillows to prop yourself up; that only increases pressure on the stomach.

Regurgitation is the appearance of refluxed liquid in the mouth. In most patients with GERD, usually only small quantities of liquid reach the esophagus, and the liquid remains in the lower esophagus. Occasionally in some patients with GERD, larger quantities of liquid, sometimes containing food, are refluxed and reach the upper esophagus. Clearly, we have much to learn about the relationship between acid reflux and esophageal damage, and about the processes (mechanisms) responsible for heartburn. This issue is of more than passing interest. Knowledge of the mechanisms that produce heartburn and esophageal damage raises the possibility of new treatments that would target processes other than acid reflux.
