Acid reflux is a common ailment. I tried Betaine HCL and it made the reflux MUCH WORSE. (Also, I ended up in the ER thinking I had a heart attack. It felt like a flame-thrower was going through my lungs). In fact, in the Encyclopedia of Natural Healing, it states that if one has (or has had) acid reflux, then they should never take Betaine HCL. Increasing vitamin D levels will optimize production of 200 antimicrobial peptides that aid in eradicating any infection in your body, including in the esophagus. Vitamin D is free and in abundance through appropriate levels of sun exposure. If this is not possible, I would recommend eating foods high in Vitamin d or taking a high-quality vitamin d supplement.

Apple Cider Vinegar is Alkaline, not acid as most believe. And instead of blaming on it, check the food intake, and the liquids you drink. Thanks. The natural methods presented here are, in my opinion, actually better for you than PPIs, H2 blockers, or Antacids because most of them actually support your body in working properly. The unnatural options above actually stop your body from doing it’s job and contribute to ill health. Being overweight increases your risk of GERD, and you’re going to suffer from occasional heartburn a lot more as well. This is because unnecessarily added pounds will put pressure on your lower esophageal sphincter. It will be more likely to loosen, and overtime it may simply weaken.

Endoscopy can check for problems in your esophagus or stomach. This test involves inserting a long, flexible, lighted tube with a camera down your throat. First, the doctor will spray the back of your throat with anesthetic and give you a sedative to make you more comfortable. This procedure is performed with an endoscope. It is usually done as an outpatient procedure. This is a thin, flexible tube that can be threaded into your esophagus. An electrode at the end of the tube heats your esophageal tissue and creates tiny cuts in it. The cuts form scar tissue in the esophagus. This blocks the nerves that respond to refluxed acid. The scar tissue that forms also helps strengthen the surrounding muscles.

Vinegar is an acid with a pH of around 5. Therefore it helps with heartburn by lowering the pH (making it more acidic) of the stomach contents to improve digestion and reduce the pressure build up we’re looking to avoid. This is the standard surgical treatment for GERD. It tightens and reinforces the LES. The upper part of the stomach more information is wrapped around the outside of the lower esophagus to strengthen the sphincter. If you can’t find a sleep wedge at a regular bedding store, you could check maternity shops. These stores often carry wedge pillows because GERD is common during pregnancy. You can also check medical supply stores, drugstores, and specialty sleep stores.

Contrary to the name, heartburn has nothing to do with your heart. Instead, the name comes from the burning sensations that occur around your chest and upper gastrointestinal tract. These burning sensations happen when stomach acids leak back into the esophagus. This discomfort can last up to two hours at a time. Several studies have found that probiotics are helpful in the treatment of gastritis, acid reflux and inflammatory bowel disease. Buttermilk is a good source of probiotics, thanks to the live cultures added to ferment the milk sugars.
